Advancing pathology through innovation: The VPC lab vision

Patient care in pathology depends on one critical factor: getting the diagnosis right, quickly and safely. As laboratories handle growing workloads and increasingly complex workflows, innovation is becoming essential. Technologies such as digital pathology, workflow automation, and safer laboratory equipment are helping laboratories improve both diagnostic quality and working conditions.

Dr. Arvydas Laurinavičius, Director and Consultant Pathologist at the National Center of Pathology in Vilnius, highlights how combining technology, lean principles, and strong laboratory culture can significantly enhance the reliability and efficiency of pathology diagnostics.

A Leading Diagnostic Center in Lithuania

The National Center of Pathology, a branch of Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos, is the largest tissue pathology diagnostic laboratory in Lithuania. The center performs around one third of all tissue pathology testing in the country, making it a critical hub for diagnostic medicine.

With a team of 20 specialized pathologists, the laboratory handles a high volume of complex cases every day. Their mission is clear: ensure accurate diagnoses while maintaining strict standards of safety, traceability, and workflow efficiency.

When Every Minute Matters: Rapid Diagnostics During Surgery

During intraoperative consultations, surgeons rely on pathologists for rapid answers. In these cases, the laboratory team must process a sample and deliver a diagnosis in approximately 20 minutes.

At the end of this process, the pathologist must answer a critical question for the surgical team: “Is it a tumor or not?”

Because surgeons are waiting for the result in real time, the workflow must be fast, precise, and error-free.

At the National Center of Pathology, the laboratory operates with a culture of perfectionism, ensuring that every step is standardized and traceable. From the moment a specimen enters the lab, it is registered, tracked, and updated throughout the entire workflow.

Maintaining this level of control is essential because sample mix-ups or lost traceability can have serious consequences for patient care. Ensuring smooth and connected workflows helps the laboratory avoid such risks.

The Importance of Slide Quality

Even with advanced technology and strong workflows, the quality of histology slides remains fundamental. For pathologists, the clarity of a slide directly impacts their ability to detect disease and make accurate diagnoses. As

Dr. Laurinavičius emphasizes, better slides lead to better diagnostic visibility. High-quality preparation ensures that pathologists can clearly see cellular structures and pathological changes, ultimately improving diagnostic confidence.

Successful pathology laboratories rely on three key pillars:

  • High-quality equipment
  • Integrated digital workflows
  • A skilled and collaborative team

When these elements work together, laboratories can maintain complete traceability, consistent standards, and reliable diagnostic results. Innovation in pathology is not just about adopting new technologies, it is about building systems and cultures that support precision, safety, and patient-centered care.
