5 Laboratory Applications in One Multifunctional Device

KOS Benchtop Tissue Processor
1.

Rapid Tissue Processing

Rapid tissue processing is the cornerstone of the KOS system, a semi-automatic tissue processor designed for minimal user interaction. Guided by an intuitive, icon-driven touchscreen terminal, operators effortlessly move tissues through fixation, dehydration, clearing, and wax infiltration.

KOS offers a set of pre-stored programs and three specialized Histomodules tailored to meet diverse laboratory needs. The 45K module efficiently handles batches of up to 45 cassettes, while the new 110 Cassette configuration maximizes capacity for higher-throughput labs.

This versatile system ensures rapid, reliable processing with minimal effort, optimizing workflows for laboratories of all sizes.

KOS Bone Decalcification
3.

Rapid and Optimized Bone Decalcification

The KOS system is expertly designed for rapid bone decalcification, delivering efficient and high-quality results. Users can access standardized, optimized protocols directly from the intuitive menu, streamlining the process with minimal effort.

KOS leverages innovative technology to accelerate decalcification and processing of bone samples. Its advanced stirring mechanism ensures a continuous flow of fresh decalcifier across the bone surface while efficiently removing saturated solutions, significantly reducing processing times and enhancing consistency.

Recent studies have shown that strong acids (e.g., hydrochloric or nitric) compromise the quantity and quality of RNA and DNA extracted from bone biopsies compared to milder agents like 12.5–14% EDTA and formic acid. To address this, Milestone developed MoL-DECALCIFIER, a cutting-edge pure EDTA solution that maximizes nucleic acid yield and integrity, ensuring superior molecular preservation for downstream analyses.

4.

Special Stains

KOS accelerates special staining by up to 76% using microwave irradiation to streamline time-consuming procedures. It includes optimized, preset protocols for 1-16 slides, guiding operators through all steps, including those performed outside the unit, to ensure consistent, operator-independent results. Supported stains include GMS for Fungi, Grimelius (Argryrophil), Masson Trichrome, Masson Fontana, PAS, Alcian Blue, Ziehl Nielsen, Elastica (Orcein), and Pearls Iron Stain.
